What are nonstick pans made of then since they require special care? Nonstick cookware is a regular application wherein the nonstick finish or coating lets food cook without making said food stick to the pan.

Nonstick is often employed to denote surfaces which are treated with PTFE or polytetrafluoroethylene. Teflon is one of the more popular brands that uses it.

However, some are wary of nonstick cookware due to PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) concerns—this is a chemical that is employed to produce fluoropolymers that compose the finish or coating of nonstick items. PFOA is said to be linked with developmental issues and tumors with animals.

PFOA is a problem, but studies have shown that it is doubtful that individuals acquire the majority of their exposure to the chemical from using nonstick cookware. The FDA has since investigated nonstick pans to assess PFOA exposure to humans and they found that the manufacturing procedures employed to create the pans in fact get rid of PFOA.

This means that during production, the chemical merely evaporates. Hence, the danger to consumers has not been adequately substantiated.

Prior to using your nonstick pan, make sure that you wash the item completely in warm, soapy water with a dishcloth or soft sponge. This last procedure seasons the pan and it is now ready for use.
